In January, the theme of our Character Essentials® curriculum is We Get Along, and we use this theme as an opportunity to teach children the importance of acceptance. By embracing each other’s differences, children benefit personally and academically and feel a higher sense of belonging as they enter kindergarten and beyond.
“The We Get Along theme focuses on ways children can work toward cooperation and getting along with others in a group,” said Joy Turner, Vice President of Education at Kiddie Academy®. “The character traits of acceptance and forgiveness are essential for establishing a peaceful community, while loyalty ensures a sense of support. Overall, learning how to work together as a team helps create a more successful community.”
Some ways to support the development of these traits at home include:
-
- Planning playdates for your child to give them an opportunity to build relationships and help them develop the skills they need to get along with others.
- Practicing ways to support each other as a family by sharing kind words, hugs, and finding ways to be helpful.
- Creating a family crest that represents everyone in your family and shows what is special about each person.
- Reading a book that teaches acceptance with your child. Pause as you read the story to discuss what they’re learning and ask them questions about various scenarios. The following books are great for this activity:
- “Penguin and Pinecone” by Salina Yoon
- “It’s Okay to Be Different” by Todd Parr
- “New Kid in Town” by Mercer Mayer
- “Can I Play Too?” by Mo Willems
